This June, our colleagues Theodor Dimache, Head of Product Engineering, and Alexandru Puiu, CTO, packed their bags, crossed the ocean, and landed right in the heart of innovation at the Databricks Data + AI Summit 2025 in San Francisco.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be surrounded by thousands of people who all believe the future is built on data and AI, you’re not alone! That’s exactly what they experienced. And they brought back some bold ideas, big insights, and even bigger questions. Here are 7 things we learned at this year’s summit:
1. Databricks isn’t just leading the data world. It’s disrupting it.
There’s a clear shift happening in how companies approach data, AI, and even application development. Databricks is right at the center of it. What stood out is not just the tools they’re building, but the ecosystem they’re shaping: one that’s open, modular, and future-proof.

2. Open wins. Always.
From Delta Lake to MLflow, the Databricks stack is increasingly defined by open standards. This isn’t just a philosophical stance, but a strategic advantage too. By betting on open formats and open sourcing key features, Databricks is helping companies escape vendor lock-in and take back control of their data infrastructure.
3. It’s not just about data. It’s about building on top of it.
We often think of data as the foundation. But what we saw in San Francisco is that data is also the platform. The real question today is: what can you build on top of it? From AI agents to real-time apps, the Summit showcased how organizations are no longer just analyzing data and began shaping products with it.
4. Everyone wants data democratization. Few know how to get there.
One thing became clear: democratizing access to data and AI is at the top of everyone’s agenda. Leaders want their teams to move faster, explore more, and build with confidence. But enabling this across departments, skill levels, and workflows? That’s still a work in progress. Tools are improving, but culture and governance still need catching up.
5. Lakehouse is no longer just a buzzword. It’s the new normal.
A few years ago, the concept of a “lakehouse” sounded like a branding exercise. Now? It’s the architectural pattern of choice for companies that want the best of both data lakes and warehouses. And the latest innovations announced by Databricks only reinforce that this hybrid model is here to stay.
6. The community is groooowing with hunger.
It wasn’t just about the tech. One of the biggest takeaways was the energy of the crowd: developers, data scientists, engineers, business leaders…All of us asking the same questions, chasing the same outcomes. It’s clear this isn’t a niche anymore. It’s a movement and we’re more than proud we took part in it.

7. We’re in the right place.
Sometimes, when you attend a big industry event, you leave with a few brochures and a nice hoodie. This time, we left with something more valuable: conviction. We’re on the right track, working with the right partners, building with the right mindset. And yes, we’ll definitely be back next year.
Final thoughts
The Databricks Data + AI Summit 2025 gave us clarity on where and how this space is evolving. As we continue to explore the intersection of AI, data engineering, and product development, events like this one remind us why we’re doing what we’re doing.
